Wood & Materials

What we make things from

A handful of timbers we know well, two finishes, and nothing hidden underneath.

Timbers

  • Walnut — Dark, warm and fine-grained. It takes oil beautifully and reads as deep brown rather than black. Our most requested timber for boards.
  • Cherry — Starts pale and darkens over its first year into a rich amber. It ages more than anything else we use, which some people love and others do not.
  • Maple — Pale, hard-wearing and so fine-grained it looks almost smooth. The traditional choice for cutting boards because it hides knife marks well.
  • Oak — Open-grained and heavy. Honest, a little rustic, and tough enough to take daily work without complaint.
  • Beech — Dense and even. Good for spoons and anything that takes a knock, because it wears uniformly instead of denting.

Finishes

  • Food-safe oil — A plant-based hardening oil. It soaks in rather than sitting on top, so the grain stays visible and the surface stays repairable.
  • Wax balm — Beeswax blended with oil, buffed to a soft matte. It adds a little protection and a lot of feel.
  • What we do not use — No wood stains to make one timber look like another, and no lacquer to seal it under plastic. If we wanted plastic, we would not be working with wood.

Where the timber comes from

We buy from small independent suppliers and sawmills, and we work through boards rather than pallets. Where a piece has a known origin, we will tell you.

Every piece is different

Grain, colour and figure vary from board to board, and sometimes across a single board. Product photos are representative, not identical. If you need to match an existing piece, send us a photo in daylight first and we will tell you honestly how close we can get.
